150 Years of Crescent College 1859 – 2009

The 150th Anniversary of the founding of Crescent College was celebrated at a special dinner held in Dublin on Saturday Nov 7th 2009. The evening was open to past pupils and former staff and their partners, from recent past-pupils of the Dooradoyle school to more veteran pupils from O’Connell St. .

An excellent evening was enjoyed by all. We had travellers from the USA, Germany, Luxembourg, Scotland, England, Cork, Galway and Kilkenny. Over forty had travelled from Limerick.

Fr. Jim Corkery was the first speaker who gave a very humourous account of his days as both a pupil and young teacher at Crescent College. His mimicry was wickedly funny and brought the house down. Fr. Jim was followed by the famous Bill Whelan. Bill too was a pupil at the Crescent from primary school through his secondary education. Bill’s vivid account of his younger school days and the colourful characters who taught him touched a real nerve. He evoked the spirit of the diverse and unique Jesuits and teachers who a oversaw a wonderful and complete education.

We understand that in previous years Crescent had a past pupils’ union with a thriving Dublin branch. Saturday’s event might give that new life. Other Irish Jesuit schools have a benevolent fund and maybe something like that would provide the focus and purpose for an annual meeting.
